The first one :) Can’t say I care for the takes that Hange was suicidal and personally I think canon contradicts the notion. A person can cry from pain while unconscious, so seeing Levi in that state + the overwhelming stress of their current situation is what I was trying to go for 😁 ❤️

Yep I’ve seen the show and enjoyed it a lot! It was a nice, lighthearted breather during the long Dread™ of waiting for each new part of AoT to be released. I’m normally skeptical of young child characters since they usually aren’t portrayed very well but Anya is an absolute delight. Definitely looking forward to the new season and movie coming up!

We wanted to express not sadness but the beauty of Hange as a human being. ♪ We kept the singing restrained to convey Hange’s breathing… Then, we created a moment of silence just before the flying boat took off and, with the success of the time gained, revived the music → step ④.
“When the flying boat took off and Armin and his friends cried, there were actors’ voices of weeping… However, I hardened my heart and cut everything out… because I wanted to prioritize the audience’s feelings as viewers.
Then, we move on to the second chapter after reuniting with Captain Erwin, but Director Hayashi requested "no music for the second chapter’s title” → step ⑤.
You know, despite I LOVE the ODM scene, I still have so many beefs with this episode regarding how they watered down and minimized Hanji’s and Levi’s moment. And Hanji’s micro expressions.
And then how Hanji’s death goes by like “Oh, dear, this really significant character just died, BUT - OH ANYWAY, Show must go on!”
And it’s so funny and also such a fucking pain in the ass for me because I just wanted ONE DAMN THING - that was to feel THE CLEAR PAIN we got from the manga for ONCE, aside from the worth of Hanji’s sacrifice (Falco you didn’t fly, you mf).
But it just isn’t there in the animation because we can actually see the “beautiful, heroic, even hopeful” tone they set up as juxtaposing to the first 15 minutes of the 1h long episode (and the last 20 episodes of disgrace and despair we got on S04 Part 01 and 02).
I swear - I’d been literally shedding tears EVERY TIME I reread 132. I"m a fucking crybaby. And yet, to me, the animation just seems to have really cared about “the go out with bang” rather than make an more definitive effort into showing MORE CLEALY all the different range of emotions Hanji goes through.
I def didn’t come back after 3 years of suffering over the treatment Hanji got in this last part of the manga to see these moments in animation being kinda gaslighting, to the point I have to look at damn GIFS or Slow-motion speed to feel anything beyond annoyance.
It’s all quite shitty.
Just… all of this 😞

Every few days a clip of DYH winds up on my dash or tl and I’ll try to rewatch it with fresh eyes and an open mind but each time it falls flat and winds up leaving a bad taste in my mouth. It’s so frustrating because I want to feel it deeply, I want to like it as much as possible for what it is but.. it evokes so little emotion and lacks so much heart and knowing that THAT is how the scene will forever be remembered is just salt in the wound.
